Description
Creating a New Generation Family Destination Inside a Commercial Mall
The client aimed to develop a large-scale indoor sports and entertainment destination capable of attracting families throughout the year while differentiating itself from conventional playground concepts.
Rather than relying on standard play structures, the goal was to create a landmark family attraction that could drive repeat visits, increase dwell time, and strengthen the mall’s position as a family-oriented destination.
The project required a solution that could simultaneously:
- Generate sustained foot traffic
- Appeal to multiple age groups
- Encourage longer stays
- Support food and retail spending
- Deliver a memorable branded experience
- Maximize the value of a challenging architectural space
The result is an immersive Puppet Magic Workshop-themed sports center where children enter a fantastical oversized world inspired by desserts, everyday objects, and handcrafted puppets.
CHALLENGES
1. Managing High Visitor Volume Without Congestion
A venue of this scale must accommodate large visitor numbers while maintaining smooth circulation.
The client required:
- Efficient traffic distribution
- Multiple play routes
- Reduced bottlenecks
- Clear visual supervision
- Balanced activity zones
Â
2. Converting Structural Limitations into Design Opportunities
The existing building featured prominent horizontal beams that disrupted visual continuity and limited planning flexibility.
Without thoughtful design intervention, these structural elements could:
- Create fragmented spaces
- Restrict play experiences
- Impact aesthetics
- Introduce operational challenges
Â
3. Appealing to Diverse Customer Segments
The center needed to engage:
- Toddlers
- Young children
- School-age children
- Teenagers
- Parents participating in family activities
This required a carefully layered attraction mix with varying levels of challenge and engagement.
Â
4.Supporting Long-Term Commercial Performance
Beyond entertainment value, the venue needed to generate:
- Repeat visitation
- Strong social sharing potential
- Extended dwell time
- Increased secondary spending opportunities
- Sustainable revenue growth
OUR SOLUTION
1. Strategic Circulation Planning
Instead of placing attractions independently, the entire venue was planned around a continuous exploration journey.
The design creates multiple interconnected pathways through:
- Vertical movement
- Loop circulation
- Multi-level exploration
- Visual discovery points
Visitors naturally transition between attractions without congestion, allowing the venue to accommodate high daily attendance while maintaining a comfortable experience.
2. Functional Zoning Strategy
Adventure Challenge Zone
Trampoline Activity Zone
Multi-Level Play Structure
Family Exploration Areas
3. Equipment Mix Strategy
The attraction portfolio was selected to balance:
- High-capacity play
- Physical activity
- Repeat play value
- Multi-age participation
- Operational efficiency
The result is a venue that remains engaging for first-time visitors while encouraging repeat visits.
4. Safety & Compliance
- Fully compliant with ASTM / EN / CE standards
- Export-grade materials and engineering
- Structured installation and inspection protocols

FAQ
1. What is the concept behind the MOROM Children’s Sports Center?
The Wuhan MODOCHI Children’s Sports Center is a large-scale indoor sports and adventure destination designed around the concept of a Puppet Magic Workshop. The project combines immersive storytelling, physical challenges, and family entertainment experiences within a 13,000 sqm commercial environment.
Instead of relying solely on traditional play equipment, the design transforms oversized desserts, household objects, and puppet-inspired elements into interactive play spaces that encourage exploration and imaginative play.
2. Why was a puppet-themed concept selected for this project?
The Puppet Magic Workshop theme creates a unique emotional connection between children and the environment.
By enlarging familiar objects such as pastries, gift boxes, tunnels, and workshop elements, the space becomes a fantasy world seen from a child’s perspective. This storytelling approach helps differentiate the venue from conventional sports parks and indoor playgrounds while strengthening brand recognition and visitor recall.
3. How did the design team solve the building beam limitations?
One of the project’s major challenges was the presence of large structural beams throughout the venue.
Rather than concealing these architectural elements with decorative finishes, the design team integrated them into the play environment through giant themed boxes, donut tunnels, elevated platforms, and spiral slides.
This strategy achieved three goals simultaneously:
- Improved visual continuity
- Enhanced safety and spatial efficiency
- Added new play experiences throughout the venue
The result is a seamless environment where structural constraints become part of the attraction itself.
4. Who is the primary target audience?
The project was designed to serve multiple customer segments, including:
- Children aged 3–6
- Children aged 7–12
- Teenagers
- Parent-child families
- School and group activities
The combination of sports-based attractions and immersive environments ensures broad market appeal and year-round operation.
5. How does themed design influence business performance?
A strong theme increases emotional engagement and helps create memorable experiences.
For the Wuhan MODOCHI project, the immersive Puppet Magic Workshop concept contributes to:
- Higher visitor satisfaction
- Increased social media sharing
- Stronger word-of-mouth marketing
- Greater repeat visitation
- Enhanced brand differentiation
A distinctive environment often becomes a key driver of customer loyalty.
